Thank you, Sorelle and Leon for yet another thought provoking newsletter. Here in Australia, though, I think the social pressure is somewhat different. It's more 'Don't pay any more tax than you legally have to'. It was, after all, the late Kerry Packer who famously said "I pay whatever tax I am required to pay under the law, not a penny more, not a penny less... if anybody in this country doesn't minimize their tax they want their heads read because as a government I can tell you you're not spending it that well that we should be donating extra." and I think most, if not all, Australians agree with him. Even the politicians, who, after all seem to be the ones who get caught committing tax evasion, which is another thing entirely ( and Kerry Packer did NOT recommend. )
Amazing post. I don't see your ideas about paying less taxes as an option, I see them as mandatory behavior now. It's about time governments acted responsibly towards the people they govern. Why else should we tolerate them?
Thanks for the article. The IRS is not hiring 87,000 agents but is planning on hiring 87,000 staff over a number of years. The vast majority are not law enforcement agents and will not be carrying guns. The IRS does have approximately 2,500 law enforcement agents on the payroll who have arrest authority and do carry guns. This has been the case for decades. They typically arrest persons for violations of federal tax law.
I think the general point that the IRS is trying to build up its enforcement arm is correct. However, the stories circulating on the internet that the U.S. government is hiring is hiring a massive army of 87,000 agents to kick the average citizen's door in is not accurate. The U.S. government has law enforcement agents employed throughout the federal government sometimes at obscure agencies. For example, the Department of Education has a small number of law enforcement agents and Health and Human Services has hundreds of law enforcement agents. See below.
What about those videos that came up many years ago and are still showing up saying that there is no law that says we have to pay taxes. No one can find any written law that says Americans have to pay taxes yet, every year, the IRS manages to send people to jail on just that, not paying taxes. America is criminal.
Taxation without representation is theft. The high earners and big corporations can influence tax rates with their support of Congressional contenders. The poor trade their votes for ever more government handouts. The middle class, what is left of it has virtually no influence on the people who write tax law. I am not sure that these 87,000 new IRS hires will go after those with deep pockets exclusively. They sound like their purpose is to stifle dissent rather than increase revenue.
